Supporting Afghan Women's Struggle for their Human Rights

Shortly after UNGA High-Level Week, the U.S. Department of State, the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations, and the Georgetown Institute for Women Peace and Security, will convene a roundtable to discuss the work of UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan Richard Bennett, focusing on the Taliban’s discriminatory edicts against women and girls. The event will spotlight the dire situation the Taliban have created for Afghan women and girls and look to mobilize international support for Afghan women’s rights. It will also serve to reiterate our global commitment to human rights and press for accountability while encouraging other countries to do the same. The audience will include UN Permanent Representatives from Security Council Members and Muslim-majority countries, and Afghan women leaders, emphasizing the need for coordinated international efforts to address these abuses and support Afghan women.

This side event looks at the role of science and digital technologies in helping decision-makers accelerate progress towards the SDGs. From Words to Action: A Networked Approach to Upholding Commitments from the Summit of the Future

Taking place at the 2024 UN Summit of the Future, this hybrid event will explore how Action 59 of the draft Pact of the Future (“strengthen our partnerships to deliver on existing commitments and to address new and emerging challenges”) can be made real. We expect that this Summit will take us several steps forward to renewing global governance. However, as with international agreements before it, maximizing the impact of outcomes will require an intentional, networked, and sustained effort from member states and civil society in its wake.

Resolution on Financing for Peacebuilding: Two Years On, From Theory to Practice

The purpose of this event is to portray the journey since the adoption of the Resolution (A/RES/76/305) which has spurred the development of concrete initiatives and partnerships that exemplify the principles it enshrines. For instance, the Investing for Peace (I4P) initiative and its Specialized Investment Vehicle (SPV) for Peace, proposed by a coalition led by Germany's Federal Foreign Office and the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), embodies the spirit of the resolution. This initiative aims to finance peace-positive business models that not only benefit conflict-affected populations but also address the root causes of conflict and instability. By integrating peace-enhancing mechanisms into investments, the SPV lowers risks for investors while strengthening community resilience.

Closing the Divide: Strengthening World Bank Goals to Fight Inequality

Professor Joseph Stiglitz, Ministers from the German and Namibian Governments, and the Executive Director of Oxfam International will call on the World Bank to urgently introduce new goals and indicators to ensure a rapid reduction in inequality both at national and global levels. The briefing comes as the new World Corporate Scorecard is being negotiated under President Banga which will direct the Bank’s work, and pressure is growing on the World Bank to do more to tackle inequality. The gap between rich and poor is rising in four out of ten of the countries where the World Bank works, but there is increasing momentum for a change of course, and both governmental and non-governmental actors are calling for bolder goals and targets to tackle inequality and measure progress.

Counting the Divide: how the World Bank and the UN should strengthen the way they measure inequality

In July, 2023, over 225 economists and inequality leaders wrote to World Bank President Ajay Banga and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, drawing attention to alarmingly high levels of national and global inequality and the harm this is causing to people across the world. The letter called on the World Bank and UN to strengthen its indicators and goals on inequality urgently to address this dangerous divide. In this panel discussion, four of the key signatories to the letter will discuss in more detail what needs to happen urgently at the UN and the World Bank to redouble efforts to fight inequality.

Committed in the Face of Crisis: Lessons from Colombia’s People-Centered Migration and Protection Policy

This discussion aims to bring together UN-member states, UN agencies, funders, and non-government migration, protection, and justice experts to discuss Colombia’s migration and protection policy. It will explore the commendable policy efforts made by successive Colombia administrations to pursue economic and social integration of Venezuelan refugees and migrants in the face of crisis and the challenges around securing adequate international support for this unprecedented effort. Women and Public Diplomacy: How a small country had a large impact on an international humanitarian crisis

In August 2021, Albania took in over 3,000 Afghan evacuees, seeking safety from the new Taliban regime. This decision demonstrated that small countries can mitigate humanitarian crises and that they can build new solidarities and partnerships in the process. In this Luce Lecture, Dr Odeta Barbullushi explains the interplay between foreign policy decision-making, humanitarian crisis, and state identities. Drawing from her own experience, Dr Barbullushi reflects on women's contributions to international mediation as well as the role of education in shaping decision making in foreign policy.

Demographic and Socioeconomic Changes Induced by the COVID-19 Pandemic in Bangladesh: Dynamics and challenges of new circumstances

BRAC, UN Women, and New York University’s Center on International Cooperation (CIC) recently concluded a study of the demographic and socioeconomic changes induced by the unprecedented reverse (urban-to-rural) migration that took place in Bangladesh following the COVID-19 lockdown. Findings from the study reveal the dire circumstances facing returnee migrants, their families, and their rural communities, including an alarmingly high incidence of child marriages among surveyed households, an explosion in household debt, and the drying up of income opportunities.

The NYU Center on International Cooperation is hosting a panel discussion with the co-authors of the book recently published by Routledge, "The Future of Diplomacy After COVID-19: Multilateralism and the Global Pandemic." Written by a team of authors who have directly worked in international public policy and the establishment of global agendas at the United Nations, this book considers the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on international diplomacy and the future of multilateralism in key areas including public health, sustainable development, economics and financing, digital cooperation, peace and security, and the rule of international law.

Conflict Early Warning/Early Action Practitioners Workshop

The 2021 Practitioners Workshop on Conflict Early Warning/Early Action took place virtually on 18-20 May. This year’s workshop will bring more visibility to specific advancements in the conflict and violence early warning and early action (EWEA) fields, with the idea to share global lessons from different actors and offer specific skills-building opportunities. The nature of conflict is transforming across the world while many new technologies are developing exponentially. The Conflict Early Warning/Early Action (EWEA) community is transforming its work as well to tackle the challenge and seize the opportunity.

The event will discuss the resort to violence and violent extremism in Northeast Syria based on a new report entitled “Preventing the Re-emergence of violent extremism in Northeast Syria.” This report was produced as a joint collaboration by the National Agenda for the Future of Syria Programme (NAFS) at UN ESCWA and the Center on International Cooperation at New York University.

Monitoring Compound Risk in the COVID-19 Era: Advances and Future Directions for Tracking Compound Risk
