The Data Discussion in Post-2015 Development

When it was released in May 2013, the report of the High-level Panel on the Post-2015 Development Agenda called for a “data revolution” for sustainable development. The intent is to empower individuals and governments to achieve the post-2015 development goals by employing new technology and improving access to data.

CIC Senior Fellow Molly Elgin-Cossart wrote earlier that a data revolution could improve evidence-based decision-making and policies and increase transparency and accountability. She has also commented on the need for a “Global Partnership on Development Data” that would bring together diverse actors to improve data accessibility and quality.

This week UNDP, with the support of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, is addressing this issue by hosting a three-day discussion entitled “Data and Accountability for the Post-2015 Framework.” The dialogue is meant to convene various development actors in order to form a common understanding of data in the context of the post-2015 framework and ultimately contribute to the ongoing sustainable development debates in the Open Working Group and elsewhere.
