New York University’s Center on International Cooperation (CIC) is honored to be the first-ever partner to work with global analytics and advisory firm Gallup to collaborate on their annual Global Safety Report. Together, CIC and Gallup bring world-class data and policy expertise to show what drives safety and how it can be built. The findings demonstrate that violence is not inevitable, and that safety can be created city by city, system by system.
Emphasized in this report is a new finding that 73% of adults worldwide report feeling safe walking alone at night where they live, the highest level recorded since Gallup began tracking the measure in 2006.
In this report, the CIC team provides perspectives in four key areas:
- How Pelotas and Niterói in Brazil—both members of the Peace in Our Cities network —are building a safer country through data-informed, holistic, and cross-sectoral approaches.
- How countries like South Africa are engaging new partners, such as the private sector, in initiatives with the national government as a means of violence prevention.
- Unpacking the gender gap and why women globally feel more unsafe than men.
- Recommendations for a path forward in light of increasing conflicts around the world, deepening political polarization, and rising tensions.
