NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 14—Kenya’s candidate for the African Union Commission Chairperson, Raila Odinga, has pledged to spearhead efforts to secure two permanent seats for Africa at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
Ambassador Martin Kimani emphasized the need for internal unity and reform within the African Union (AU) as a priority for Africa’s bid for permanent seats on the UN Security Council (UNSC). He cautioned that pursuing UNSC seats without addressing internal AU divisions could lead to infighting and external manipulation, undermining the continent’s collective interests.
Kimani also highlighted the importance of strengthening the AU’s Peace and Security Council and accelerating the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to bolster Africa’s decision-making and security.
