Stand Up for SDG16+: Accelerating Progress on SDG 16+ is a high-level side event to the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly. In the same spirit of the joint 2018 HLPF launch, this side event will continue to shine a spotlight on SDG 16+ and build momentum to support the achievement of SDG 16+  as an end goal itself and as an enabler for other SDGs. The side event will provide a platform for member states, private sector, civil society, and youth to highlight how they are supporting the achievement of SDG 16+.

This side event to the High-Level Meeting on Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace will explore the potential for the Sustainable Development Goal targets for peaceful, just and inclusive societies (SDG16+) to provide a meaningful set of guide posts for actors as they seek to seize windows of opportunity to sustain peace.

This side event:

  • Acted as a final formal consultation on the draft of the roadmap on Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Societies, ahead of its launch during high-level week of the UN General Assembly in September 2017.
  • Highlighted examples of implementation of the SDG targets for peaceful, and inclusive societies from pathfinder countries and other stakeholders.
  • Promoted a discussion about how partners can identify strategic priorities and work together to deliver them.

On September 4-5, 2014 CIC partnered with Saferworld and the Permanent Mission of Mexico to host a policy roundtable entitled Global Perspectives on Peaceful and Inclusive Societies and the Post-2015 Framework: A Dialogue between Experts and Member States. A small group of experts from India, Turkey, South Africa, Brazil, and Ethiopia gathered in New York to discuss peace and governance issues in a development context during a day-long discussion on September 4th.

On September 17, 2014 CIC Director Barnett Rubin spoke on a panel at the Woodrow Wilson Center. The event accompanied the launch of a report which examines the impact of US policy on a nuclear agreement on the Middle East.
