Solidarity in Action: Countering anti-feminist trends around the world

Monday March 13, 2023 | 8:30 AM – 10:00 AM | Virtual Event

Join Pathfinders’ Grand Challenge on Inequality and Exclusion on the sidelines of the sixty-seventh session of the Commission on the Status of Women, for a thought-provoking virtual discussion on how to address the rise of anti-feminist movements around the world.

Around the world, we are seeing a surge of divisive rhetoric and backlash, functioning to undermine policies, movements and governments that aim to reduce inequalities and build inclusive societies. Advocates and feminist movements are often used as a scapegoat, framed in a way to pit men against women, or twisted to exclude and attack LGBTQI+ communities. In all corners of the world, these narratives are converting into harmful policies and threaten progress on gender equality that ultimately benefits everyone.

The discussion will explore how these narratives are unraveling across their world, their impact on policies, and the ways in which policymakers and civil society  are successfully countering discourses of division and prejudice, to build solidarity and resist anti-feminist movements that threaten our path towards gender equality and social justice.

The session will be chaired by Pathfinders program director, Dr. Faiza Shaheen and invited speakers include:

  • H.E. Ana Helena Chacón, Former Vice President, Costa Rica
  • Sumi Madhok, Professor of Political Theory and Gender Studies at the London School of Economics
  • Dr. Salma Nims, former Secretary-General of the Jordanian National Commission for Women
  • Kim Sooyeon, feminist scholar, Republic of Korea
