Director, Crisis Prevention and Peacebuilding
For more than two decades, the Center on International Cooperation (CIC) has been a leader in applied policy that links politics, security, justice, development and humanitarian issues. Our aspiration is to find ways to advance multilateral action to prevent crises and to promote peace, justice, and inclusion. We believe that a strengthened multilateral order is one where there is closer cooperation at country level between entities like the UN and the IFIs, and where there are integrated approaches to prevention that break down silos between fields and entities. In practice, this approach relies on practical ideas generation, the ability to translate research into feasible recommendations for a senior policy audience, and close diplomatic work with key partners in public and private convening.
Based in New York, CIC has close contacts with UN and World Bank headquarters and with member states at the UN and the World Bank, and has increasingly developed significant programming at country level. CIC is an applied policy think tank: we are a Center at New York University and maintain deep research networks, but our work is targeted at policy advice and impact rather than teaching and peer-reviewed research.
CIC seeks a dynamic, innovative Director for its Crisis Prevention and Peacebuilding program to drive and shape the Center’s work around prevention, peacebuilding and humanitarian crises. The Director should have a strong interest and ability in leading high-quality research, evidence-based policy reform processes, and interacting with decision-makers. They should bring proven experience and knowledge of the multilateral system (with a focus on the UN and the international financial institutions), solid practical and research expertise on conflict and crisis prevention (including field experience), and a commitment to elevating the voices of small- and mid-level countries, the Global South, and marginalized communities in international debates. This position links together two areas of CIC’s work–prevention and peacebuilding, and humanitarian crises, where the program lead reports to the Director.

- Leading and managing research activities for CIC’s conflict prevention and peacebuilding work and its humanitarian crises program: providing overall thought leadership, strategic direction, and oversight, including defining the programs’ core objectives, strategy, and policy and research agendas.
- Effectively managing a team of policy researchers, including research partnerships with a wide range of international think tanks.
- Representing the initiative and its research and policy recommendations at a high level. This includes presenting research findings to senior leadership at the UN and other multilaterals, at key international conferences relevant to the program’s work; frequently producing written outputs that highlight the program’s work, including blog posts and op-eds; and providing media interviews upon request.
- Leading on the application of research findings through support and advisory services on policy take-up, in particular with national government partners, multilateral counterparts, and donors in relation to their bilateral programs.
- Securing the continued financial sustainability of the research program; enhancing CIC’s profile among bilateral donors and multilaterals; and developing new project and funding opportunities.
- As a member of CIC’s senior management team, and in collaboration with other Directors, contributing to CIC’s annual work plan and maximizing connections with CIC’s other research programs (e.g., Pathfinders for SDG16+; Congo Research Group; UN-IFI); also, ensuring the implementation of NYU-CIC business processes.
- Playing a leadership role working toward and influencing team collaboration, team building and team effectiveness, modeling these skills for the team.
- Other tasks as requested by CIC’s Director
