This Thursday and Friday, the President of the UN General Assembly will lead a thematic debate on ensuring stable and peaceful societies. CIC Senior Fellow David Steven has prepared a memo to serve as input into the discussion.

At the tenth session of the Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals, the representative from Guatemala affirmed, “we need to do the not nice or glamorous job of choosing and prioritizing.” The OWG is currently facing the daunting task of winnowing down and reformulating 19 focus areas into concrete goals and targets, and a lack of consensus persisted in its most recent session.

In 2015, the international community will be absorbed by four key multilateral processes: the sustainable development goals agenda, the next WTO ministerial meeting, an international summit on finance for development, and the UNFCCC climate summit.
