Annie Pforzheimer is a Senior Fellow at the NYU Center on International Cooperation (CIC).
A retired US Department of State career diplomat with the rank of Minister Counselor, she served as Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Afghanistan and as Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Kabul from 2017 to 2019. She previously served in the State Department as Director of Security and Rule of Law Assistance at the US Embassy in Mexico, Director of United Nations (UN) Peacekeeping Policy, and in the National Security Council (NSC).
Leaving government service in 2019, she has served as a Non-Resident Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), an adjunct professor of international relations at Pace University and the City University of New York (CUNY), a human rights advocate, and a foreign and security policy analyst and commentator. She has authored and co-authored numerous reports, articles, and op-eds on Afghanistan, the rule of law, and transnational organized crime.
She holds a Master of Science in National Security Studies from the National Defense University (NDU) and is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR).
