Director for Finance and Operations

New York University’s Center on International Cooperation (CIC) has built a reputation over two decades for its work on the links between politics, security, justice, and sustainable development. Our core mission is to enhance international responses on the countries and issues most important to conflict prevention and recovery, through direct and regular engagement with multilateral institutions and the wider policy community.

CIC seeks a Director for Finance and Operations to serve as a key element in CIC’s financial management and provide leadership on the management of day-to-day operations. The principal job responsibilities of the Director for Finance and Operations cut across three areas. These include: strategic budgeting and overall financial management; grant management and financial reporting to donors and to internal NYU entities; and support to operations, including contracting, purchasing, internal processes/workflows, compliance with NYU policies, other issues.

The Director oversees the allocation of resources to meet priorities, controls all expenditures and statement of accounts to insure fiscal integrity, and directs special projects that may include space renovations, equipment purchases and long-range plans.

A key feature of the Director for Finance and Operations is their role as the liaison between CIC and internal NYU offices important to finance and grant management, including but not limited to Sponsored Programs Administration, Faculty of Arts and Sciences Fiscal Office, Accounts Payable, Procurement, and Insurance and Risk Management.

We are looking for a candidate that has a passion for working with teams; who is adept at delivering high-level budget forecasts as well as fine-grained financial reports; and someone who has an enthusiasm for problem solving and making processes work better. The position requires an ability to communicate effectively both in written and oral form, to have fluency with budgets and financial reports, and be sensitive to the needs of a wide range of internal and external constituencies. The ideal candidate will have experience within an international nonprofit setting, particularly those delivering internationally in developing countries. They will also have a practical understanding of working within a large organization; some experience with sponsored programs in a university setting is a plus. The candidate should have experience managing employees, with a proven ability to cultivate staff skills.

Reporting to the Director, the position will sit on CIC’s senior management team and will manage the work of the Budget and Finance Administrator.


Required Education:
Bachelor's Degree in business administration, social sciences, international affairs, or related field.

Preferred Education:
Master's Degree in non-profit management, business administration, public administration, or related field (or equivalent practical experience).

Required Experience:
10+ years of progressive experience in a non-profit setting on finance, grant management, and operational activities.

Preferred Experience:

  • Fund accounting
  • Working within a global organization and handling international financial transactions
