Emerging Powers

The usage of the term emerging powers is a recognition of the rising influence of several nations that have recently increased their presence in global affairs.  The international order and multilateral architecture face multiple challenges: from the economic and diplomatic rise of new powers, who are challenging the terms of current arrangements; from a dimming of the vibrancy of the trans-Atlantic alliance; and from global challenges that create collective action hurdles that neither U.S. diplomacy nor multilateral institutions has yet mastered.   CIC has devoted research and commentary to the topic of emerging powers mainly through the Managing Global Order project, which maps the changing global order, identifies key gaps in the provision of global order, and facilitates policy dialogue between established and emerging powers.
